The Year of the Dog by Grace Lin: Book Cover

The Year of the Dog: a Novel

by Grace Lin

Frustrated at her seeming lack of talent for anything, a young Taiwanese American girl sets out to apply the lessons of the Chinese Year of the Dog, those of making best friends and finding oneself, to her own life.

Reviews by Groton-Dunstable students:

Grace Lin wrote about her childhood in this book. She wrote about her best friend, Melody, her greatest hopes (being "Dorothy" in the school play and winning an award for her story, "The Ugly Vegetables"), and her family. She makes an everyday activity sound exciting, such as gardening with her mom and eating her Chinese dinner. Grace Lin decides she will be a writer at age 9 or 10. The Year of the Dog is the year in the Chinese calendar that you find out what you want to be, and it's a lucky year. This book was really fun to read. I highly recommend it!

The Year of the Dog is about Grace Lin’s life.  She is a

Chinese - American person and the author of the book.  The book was so good that I read it in one night.  In “The Year of the Dog” the Chinese tradition states that “The Year of the Dog” is a lucky year.  Grace is thinking she isn’t lucky but then she realizes that she is lucky.  One of the lucky things that happens to her is she wins fourth place in a write and illustrate your own book contest for children throughout the United States.  I would recommend this book so that you can find out more of the lucky things that happen to Grace by reading The Year of the Dog.
