GDRHS Develops Fabrication Lab
In an effort to keep pace with some of the top colleges and universities in the country, Groton-Dunstable Regional High School (GDRHS) has developed its own fabrication lab. This lab is designed as the project-based cornerstone of the Engineering and Design program currently being offer at GDRHS. In many high-achieving high schools students are offered a wide variety of rigorous academic courses; however, at GDRHS academic course work is being supplemented with hands-on applications experience.
This lab was created with the generous support of the Frank Waters Vocational Education Scholarship Fund administered by the Town of Groton's Commissioners of the Trust Funds and Groton-Dunstable Science Technology Engineering and Math organization (GDSTEM.org). These groups, in conjunction with school administrators and teachers, have worked to develop a program that addresses the needs of a variety of students. Students who excel in the theoretical realm will find this class invaluable. Their ideas and understandings will move from the conceptual to the real as students create models and prototypes. Students who are more visual and application-oriented will find that working in a lab makes the learning in the classroom more relevant. While still in its infancy, this program has shown great promise and has become very popular with students.
