As your school nurse, I enjoy the very special privilege of caring for your child. Please take a few minutes from your busy day to note some very important information that will help me provide the best care and service to your family:

Medications: I am happy to assist students who need medications at school and request that all medications be brought to school by the parent, guardian, or designated adult.  For safety reasons, please do not send medication in your child’s backpack or on the van.  Medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) will require written consent and dosage instructions by you and your child’s health-care provider.  New forms will need to be complete by both you and your child’s health-care provider any time there is a change in the dose, time, or type of medication.

First Aid for Illness and Injury: We make every effort to safeguard your child’s health at school.  In the event of an emergency or illness, you will be contacted immediately.  To ensure optimum care, it is important to update us immediately with any changes in your phone number, address, your child’s health, new medications, or anything else that impacts his or her well-being at school.

Control of Communicable Diseases and Illness: Your child’s good health is important to me!  Hygiene and health are taught and emphasized throughout the year.  I will periodically send home information about what’s “going around” and will share tips to keep your family well. Please see the Illness & Attendance Guidelines below. Also, feel free call or see me whenever you are uncertain about sending your child to school.

You are encouraged to share any concerns or problems relevant to your child’s health.  If you have any questions or would like to meet with me, please do not hesitate to call me between 9am-3pm at 978-448-2297.

Best wishes for a fantastic school year!
Sincerely,

Lorinda Dishington Ortiz, RN, BSN, M.Ed.

Illness & Attendance Guidelines

In order to reduce the spread of illness please remember your child should stay home from school if he or she has:

  • Fever - For a temperature above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Please note: Students need to be fever-free (without the use of fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin) for at least 24 hours before returning to school.  Fever-reducing medicine may cover-up a fever and the fever could return when the medicine wears off.  Your child should remain home for 24 hours after the fever has passed.
  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea - Student may return to school 6 hours after last episode – if completely recovered from signs or symptoms of illness.  If unsure your child, please keep your child home for 24 hours.
  • Cough - Uncontrollable, infectious cough.
  • Contagious Disease - Suspected communicable disease (such as chicken pox, lice, etc.).
  • Infections - Suspected infection of the eyes (such as conjunctivitis), nose, throat (such as strep throat), skin (such as scabies), or scalp (such as lice). Students must stay home for the first 24 hours on antibiotic therapy.
  • Rash of Unknown Origin - Student may return to school when written authorization is received from the health care provider.

Peanut/Nut-Free Classrooms

  • Miss Rossbach
  • Mrs O'Neill
  • Miss Mollie

Snacks containing nuts or peanuts are not allowed in above the classrooms.  Some students have severe life-threatening peanut and nut allergies.  Strict avoidance of peanuts, nuts, and nut products is the only way to prevent a life-threatening allergic reaction.  We are asking for your assistance in providing the students with a safe learning environment.

Please DO NOT send snacks containing:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts

Examples of snacks that are not allowed in class include: peanut butter (sandwiches or crackers), granola, mixed nuts, artificial nuts, etc.  Please carefully read the labels of your child’s snacks for any peanut or nut ingredients.

Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe life-threatening reaction to those who are allergic to them.

If your child has eaten peanuts or nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed with soap and water prior to entering the school.  Hand sanitizers do not remove peanut/nut residue.
