Groton-Dunstable Regional School District To Survey Parents, Community-At-Large To Improve Communications

GROTON, MA, SEPTEMBER 24, 2007 – As part of an ongoing initiative to improve communications between the schools, parents, and overall communities of Dunstable and Groton, the Groton-Dunstable Regional School District will conduct a communications survey from late September thru October 31.

The short survey will query people to determine how they get their information about Groton-Dunstable schools and school-related matters, and to determine the most convenient and effective ways for the two towns to receive future communications.

The short survey will arrive by mail in the envelope containing the monthly bill from the Groton Electric Lighting Department in Groton, and in the November issue of the “Neighbor To Neighbor” monthly newsletter for Dunstable. It will also be available for download on the school district Web site and promoted via Dunstable Commons. (www.gdrsd.org). Residents are asked to return the survey by November 16.

It is designed to find where people currently get their school-related information from, and discover if people are getting details from accurate, established news sources such as the school district Web site and School Committee meetings, or relying on sources that aren’t always accurate, such as secondhand conversations and e-mails.

“Berta Erickson, Jon Boroshok, and I have been working together on the communications research team. We look forward to the results of this survey to help us guide improvements to school district-community communications,” said school committee chair Cindy Barrett.

Once the type of information the public wants to receive, and how they prefer to receive it has been determined, the school district  plans to address those preferences to ensure that more people receive timely, accurate information in the most convenient and cost-effective manner possible.

Superintendent Dr. Alan Genovese commented, “I believe that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that all students succeed. We serve both parents and students and are most effective when teachers, administrators and all staff work together collaboratively. Collecting and analyzing data provides valuable feedback in making improvements. This year, the school committee and administrators are combining their efforts to collect information that will help to improve communication within the district. Improved communication, along with other initiatives, should contribute to the success of students. We would love to have 100% of our parents complete this survey, along with community members. This is a great initiative for the school committee to undertake and I applaud their efforts.”
